xxxHOLiC 春夢記/Shunmuki is the original animation DVD that is coupled with xxxHolic Volume 14 of the manga. The first part came out today. The second will come out June 23 with Volume 15.
There's no real point to watching this anime unless you've either watched the anime or read the manga; hence, the manga + dvd package. This episode picks off where xxxHolic◆Kei somewhat left, and randomly skips around the manga stories from Volume 12 to Volume 14.
After Kohane had reconciled her problems, she delves into Watanuki's via his boyfriend, Doumeki.

The anime director and CLAMP wanted to show the crossover between xxxHolic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle via 5 second insert. This is to build up the intrigue so that people will buy the Tsubasa OAD/manga combos..I mean, build the excitement for both manga climaxes that should be around the corner and across the ocean.
The totally random, but the excellently creepy crow story was thrown in.
Overall impression ~ The animation quality was better than both television series, and didn't look as weird as the movie. The only flaw as usual, is that Yuuko's kimonos never look as lovely as they do in the manga or in other anime shows. The writing wasn't too bad. It was refreshing to see them try to tie a few parts of the manga together. I liked the opening, Suga Shikao's sofa, and the ending, Azu's Cherish, but the visuals didn't stand out. Well, Himawari's sillouette was lovely. As someone critical of the recent CLAMP animes, this was a short, simple manga-to-anime interpretation. For the next OAD I hope they either go deep into the Sakura-Syaoran connection that they skipped, or that the writers cover some of the other short one-shots that they skipped...like the story with the bucket-haircut boy.
And is everyone happy Amewarashi's hair is properly blue?
