[Cover] BLOOD-C DVD/BD Volume 6

Here's the cover of RG Veda Volume 2 of the CLAMP Classic Collection. It will be out February 3rd.

The BLOOD-C movie website has updated with an interview with CLAMP's Nanase Ohkawa. Sailor uniforms, Japanese swords, Quentin Tarantino, Zack Snyder, Cthulhu and HP Lovecraft mentioned. The movie will be out June 6th.

The SHOP-CLAMP store will be adding a Cardcaptor Sakura fleece available this February. CLAMP will also design mini chara goods that will also be on sale in February.

Manga stats:

Kobato. ended with Drop 24ish, Volume 6 and an artbook.
xxxHOLiC ended with chapter 213, Volume 19, and a small comic in Suga Shikao's book.
GATE 7 reaches chapter 11 and Volume 2.
Drug & Drop reaches chapter 2.
Gohou Drug Volumes 1-3 were re-released.
RG Veda and Tokyo Babylon have started to be re-released in omnibus form as a part of the CLAMP Classic Collection.

Anime productions:

xxxHolic ・Rou Adayume OAD was attached to Volume 19 of the manga.
BLOOD-C aired over the summer.

Other:

There was a CLAMP@Mobile Fes exhibit in Ikebukuro in February.
There was a devastating earthquake and tsunami in March. CLAMP posted a message of encouragement and a new CC Sakura illustration/nico video.
The CLAMP Festival was held in September in Tokyo.
CLAMP collaborated with Blythe again this year with a Yuuko doll.
CLAMP posted news of a member's health early December, and asks for understanding as it may affect their work.

[Update] Moon Saga and Code Geass

The Moon Saga press conference was held earlier today and was also streamed live. Gackt, the director and a couple other key staff were there. They talked about the story and the expansion of the play to manga, anime, game and music. The play will run July-August next year.

The 2012 BLOOD-C movie will be titled, "The Last Dark", according to this month's Shonen Ace Magazine. The movie will be in theaters June 2, 2012. [credits: MangaNews]

CLAMP will be releasing a 2012 Tsubasa desktop calendar at their new SHOP-CLAMP.COM. It will be on sale starting November 30th for 1575 yen + 500 yen shipping (no word on overseas shipping). The illustrations will be those which were used on the hardcover tankoubans: Yuuko, Fay, Sakura, Watanuki, Syaoran, Kurogane, Eagle, Fuuma, Kamui, Subaru, Seishirou, Sakura & Syaoran.

[Reviews] X 3-in-1 and GATE 7 Volume 1

The most popular question that CLAMP fans like to bring up in any CLAMP-oriented setting is, "When will X be finished?" Well, they've dangled Gohou Drug (now Drug & Drop) at us, so if and when they decide to finish X, they'll most likely announce it in an official manner. As for Viz's X in their 3-in-1 format? It's brilliant.

Techs/Specs - It is printed in a fairly large format; larger than Dark Horse's Cardcaptor Sakura Omnibus and about the size of the Japanese Tsubasa hardcover. It's printed in China (which is actually a good thing since the paper/ink quality is better when printed in China or Hong Kong). Unlike Viz's original release, the original right-to-left format is maintained. There are many, many colored pages separating each of the three volumes including colored splashes and tarot card illustrations. Viz also keeps the illustrated spines, so you can line all future installments up for one long horizontal art piece on your bookshelf.

Translations - From a comment at the community, there is definitely a difference in translation and/or editing. This volume is translated and edited by Lillian Olsen (Viz's original translator) and Leyla Aker, respectively. There's one page of translation notes, character pages, and interestingly, a couple pages of illustration notes explaining where the colored pages came from and comments from, I think, Mokona. The font choices are easy to read and unobstrusive. Sound effects are translated.

Summary - I won't give a story summary here since anyone can easily google it or read about it on Amazon, but it's great to reread this in this must-have format. I think Kamui and Fuuma's fan appeal come in much later in the story, but you gotta love old school CLAMP where they embrace a little gore and evil in a straightforward manner.

I suppose the worldwide simultaneous project is long gone, but 5-months-after-Japan isn't too long a wait. Dark Horse has released CLAMP's newest title, GATE 7, in a format that is usual for most US manga releases

Tech/Specs - No super extras like their Omnibus releases, no colored pages, standard paper quality (printed in the USA), standard size, and all that yields a competitive price.

Translation - The first volume contains the prologue, 3 chapters, and about 8 pages of very helpful and useful end notes. Popular & respected translator, William Flanagan, is on this job, so CLAMP fans can be assured that all of CLAMP's signature story elements are respected and understandable through his translation or through the end notes. It is edited by Philip Simon, and the font choice is normal. Comparing the font to Viz's...I really like the font Viz chose for X. Sound effects are translated on the side of the Japanese characters.

Summary - Again, no summary, use google. Since GATE 7's first peep on the internet, fan reaction has been rather lukewarm. After the inconclusive ending of Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC (and more recently the so-so ending of Kobato.), not too many people want to jump into another seemingly lengthy CLAMP story. 2ch has also been pretty meh about this series, and online bloggers have not been particularly raving about this yet. While they love the artwork, it seems like CLAMP's habit of withholding important plot points keeps readers wary nowadays. Some writers can give revelation after revelation which keep readers hooked with their complexity. Or a writer revolves their story around a simple idea which makes it easy to understand. CLAMP's strong points include building beautiful and intriguing settings filled with beautiful and equally intriguing characters. They tend to evolve their stories with mysterious dialogue which isn't always the most inviting of stories. GATE 7 does not stray from that model. One can however be certain that wherever CLAMP is heading, it will be a fairly great story once it gets moving.

So how many of you watched all 12 hours of the CLAMP Festival live streaming? I only endured the first 3 hours and last 2 hours. Tetsu Inada, Iwao Junko, and Naomi Tamura were among the guests that visited Sweety, new pop idol group, while they were MC'ing the stream. There was also another lesser-known idol group, Peace Love?, and someone who was demonstrating ComiPo software. I think someone tweeted that Kotani Kinya also showed up? The CLAMP Festival website has updated with images of the new CLAMP merchandise that will be available at the Festival in just a couple days. There's a small image of the CLAFES Official guidebook (with special bag) which has a new CLAMP illustration. The guide will contain interviews with the performing artists. The other goods are your standard clear files, key chains, etc.

There's an official nicovideo link HERE which will stream live on September 24 at 10am (Japan time), (9pm Friday EST) for 12 hours. The video will show the activity on the CLAMP Gakuen stage (not main stage) which will probably show the cosplay event. I expect there to be more behind the scene video, fan activity, and maybe guest interviews rather than actual performances on the nico channel.

The official B2Holic Blythe doll image has been updated at Blythedoll.com. The doll will also be on display at the Festival. Preorders will be taken on their mobile site.

[Review] xxxHOLiC POST CARD BOOK

The xxxHOLiC Post Card (two words, really?) Book is literally a book made up of postcards. All 19 manga volume cover illustrations are printed on high quality, thick, smooth, postcard-like paper. The illustrations are unobstructed by text, so you can enjoy CLAMP's beautiful illustrations of Yuuko & Watanuki. The size of the book is equal to that of the size of the xxxHOLiC manga tankouban. The postcard pages are bound together in a way that the cards are easy to pull out, so that you can mail these to a friend or frame them. The series had some of the best artwork in all of CLAMP's repertoire, and CLAMP definitely had fun dressing Watanuki & Yuuko up in different styles of clothing. These would look very lovely in frames.

I would not normally pay $35 USD for 19 small-sized pages, but hey, I was at Kinokuniya in NYC, and in shopping mode. I'm fairly certain that this is supposed to hold fans over until CLAMP releases an artbook for xxxHOLiC (which will come out this winter). Until then, this will do.

ANN: This project is defined by the presence of CLAMP, and that's how the show is being sold, even in the title – how much input did they have on the story? How would you define CLAMP's impact on what the show is?

TSUTOMU MIZUSHIMA: I can definitely say that Blood-C is a strongly CLAMP-flavored project in many ways, both story-wise and visually, starting with the character designs. CLAMP's style and sensitivities permeate the entire series in every way.

ANN: How eager were you to reinvent the characters? Having written Saya for years now, were you nervous at all about remaking her personality as radically as Blood-C does?

JUNICHI FUJISAKU: I change Saya's character setting in each of her incarnations, which is always an enjoyable process for me. Saya singing songs, being a meganekko (glasses-wearing girl) and her hairstyle are all features coming from CLAMP.

ANN: What creative challenges did you run in to while writing Blood-C? What was the biggest challenge for you personally on this series?

JUNICHI FUJISAKU: For Blood-C, Ohkawa-san from CLAMP is taking care of the storyline for each script, and I dramatize the fight scenes. Ohkawa-san's dialogue has a very distinctive style, so I carefully avoid any intervention that would eventually spoil the final result.

[Review] Magic Knight Rayearth Omnibus 1

Magic Knight Rayearth Omnibus 1 (of 2)! published by Dark Horse continues their line of CLAMP manga compilations. I've noticed that the ones printed in Canada are smaller and have the paper that feels rougher. The Cardcaptor Sakura and Clover omnibuses are printed in China and have smooth paper. I'm not a paper expert, but do prefer the feel of the smooth paper. It feels like the ink might rub off of the rough paper. Rayearth 1 is 645 pages covering 3 original volumes with the omakes and extra color illustrations.

As with my other reviews, you can easily look up the story on wiki, and everyone agrees that the strongest feature of CLAMP's story is that they successfully combines the magical girl genre with the shounen mech genre. The twist in the middle of the story (at the end of this omnibus) is also one of those refreshing 'manga is awesome' moments. It has been a fairly long time since I've read this manga, so I can't comment on how accurate the translations are, but Dark Horse has been consistent with how well they are editing these manga releases.

The anime was recently remastered and released by Animeworks. There were a few differences in the story and the production is quite old, but overall, the anime is entertaining. I'm a fan of the 3rd opening song.

Kobato. just ended its run in Newtype..though there will be a special article about it in next month's Newtype. The final volume (6) will be out August 26th in Japan.

Yen Press is releasing the manga here in the US. Volume 4 will be out July 19th, and Volume 5 will be out in December.

Sentai Filmworks is releasing the anime. Kobato Collection 1 (containing episodes 1-12) will be out August 9th.

A few blogs have excitedly posted about an upcoming event that was leaked to them by the CLAMP@Mobile site. There will be a CLAMP music and visual festival held in September. Music sung by popular seiyuu & singers, skits, talk shows, a cosplay event and the sale of limited edition festival goods will be a part of the festival.

When: September 24 with afternoon and evening concerts

Niconico will be streaming BLOOD-C with English subtitles starting July 7th. The first week is free, but then there is a $.25 subscription fee during this beta period. [News] GATE 7 @ Animate

Animate will host a traveling exhibit of GATE 7 reproductions to celebrate the release of Volume 1. There will be limited edition GATE 7 clear files, wall scrolls, postcards, book covers, mirrors, straps, mugs, fans, screen cleaners, etc sold at each store. Each store will also be giving out message sheets from CLAMP for those who make purchases. There are a few images of the merchandise at CLAMP-NET. I'll post again if Animate has images of the other merchandise. Exhibit info can be found here.

The half-French band, DUSTZ, will be responsible for BLOOD-C's opening theme. The song is titled "Spiral" and will include French lyrics. The lead singer's comments can be found on their homepage. There is no release date yet.
